Description

A savory and tender Chinese beef and onion stir fry featuring thinly sliced beef cooked with caramelized onions in a flavorful soy-based sauce — quick, satisfying, and perfect over steamed rice or noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine sliced beef with 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp cornstarch, and a drizzle of sesame oil. Mix well and let marinate for 10–15 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over high heat.
  3. Add the beef and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned but not fully cooked. Remove and set aside.
  4. Add the remaining oil to the wok, then add onions, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until fragrant and onions start to soften.
  5. Return the beef to the wok. Add oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, remaining soy sauce, beef broth, and black pepper.
  6. Stir-fry for another 2–3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly and the beef is cooked through.
  7. Remove from heat, drizzle with sesame oil, and garnish with chopped green onions.
  8. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra tenderness, add 1/4 tsp baking soda to the beef marinade.
  • Use high heat for quick searing and to keep the beef juicy.
  • Can substitute beef with chicken, pork, or tofu.
  • Add bell peppers or broccoli for more color and nutrition.
