Description

A hearty and creamy comfort food classic made with layers of seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, rich mushroom sauce, and gooey melted cheese — perfect for family dinners or potlucks.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cups potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter (for greasing the baking dish)
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onion until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Drain excess grease.
  3. Season the beef mixture with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Set aside.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
  5. Layer half of the potatoes in the prepared dish. Spread half of the soup mixture on top, followed by half of the beef mixture and half of the cheese.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, soup mixture, beef, and cheese.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  9. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute cream of chicken soup for a lighter flavor.
  • Add sliced mushrooms or green beans for extra texture and nutrition.
  • Use a mix of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese for a creamier topping.
  • This casserole reheats beautifully — perfect for meal prep or leftovers.
