Description

A lighter version of churros made in the air fryer, these churro bites are crispy, golden, and coated in a cinnamon-sugar mix for a healthier sweet treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (or coconut sugar)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix applesauce, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients to form a soft dough.
  5. Transfer the dough into a piping bag with a star tip and pipe small bite-sized pieces onto parchment paper.
  6. Air fry the bites for 8–10 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  7. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  8. Toss warm churro bites in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat evenly.

Notes

  • For an even healthier version, use a natural sweetener like monk fruit or stevia.
  • Serve with a side of melted dark chocolate for dipping.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket for best crispiness.
