Description
Italian Stromboli is a rolled baked sandwich made with pizza dough stuffed with cheese, vegetables, and Italian seasonings, then baked until golden and melty.
Ingredients
- 1 pound pizza dough
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup sliced bell peppers
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Optional: marinara sauce for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the pizza dough into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
- In a bowl, mix mozzarella, ricotta, mushrooms, bell peppers, olives, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
- Spread the filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
- Carefully roll the dough lengthwise into a tight log and pinch the seams to seal.
- Place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the top with beaten egg and make a few small slits on top for steam.
- Drizzle lightly with olive oil.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve with marinara sauce if desired.
Notes
- Do not overfill to prevent leaking.
- You can add spinach or onions for extra flavor.
- Letting it rest helps the cheese set before slicing.
