- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp chili powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 loaf French bread, sliced in half lengthwise
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil.
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
- Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.
- In a small bowl, mix softened butter with garlic powder. Spread evenly over both halves of the French bread.
- Place bread halves on the prepared baking sheet and toast in the oven for 5 minutes until slightly crisp.
- Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over each bread half and top with shredded cheese.
- Return to the oven and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from oven, sprinkle with parsley, slice, and serve hot.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef for a lighter version.
- Can substitute the bread with garlic Texas toast for a shortcut.
- For extra heat, add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes to the filling.
- Leftovers reheat well in the oven or air fryer.
