Description
Zippy Shepherd’s Pie is a bold twist on the classic comfort dish, featuring seasoned ground beef with a kick of spice, vegetables, and a creamy mashed potato topping baked until golden.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 packet spicy taco seasoning or chili seasoning mix
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 cups mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- 1 tsp hot sauce (optional, for extra heat)
- 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared)
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Sauté onion and garlic until softened.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in taco or chili seasoning, tomato paste, beef broth, and hot sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add mixed vegetables and cook another 3 minutes.
- Transfer beef mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the beef mixture.
- Dot with butter, sprinkle with paprika, and top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes until potatoes are golden and cheese is bubbly.
- Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Adjust spice level by increasing or reducing hot sauce.
- Swap beef with ground lamb for a more traditional shepherd’s pie flavor.
- Use leftover mashed potatoes to save prep time.
