Description

Creamy French Onion Ravioli is a rich, comforting one-pan pasta dish featuring cheese ravioli tossed in a silky French onion-inspired cream sauce with caramelized onions, garlic, Parmesan, and Gruyère cheese. This restaurant-quality meal delivers the classic flavors of French onion soup in an easy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 20 oz refrigerated cheese ravioli
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • Fresh thyme, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the ravioli according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized.
  4. Add the remaining butter and minced garlic, cooking for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the thyme, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce if using.
  6. Pour in the beef broth and simmer for 3-4 minutes, scraping up any browned bits from the skillet.
  7. Add the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer.
  8. Gradually stir in the Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses until smooth and creamy.
  9. Add the cooked ravioli and gently toss until fully coated in the sauce.
  10. Simmer for 2 minutes until heated through.
  11. Garnish with chopped parsley and fresh thyme before serving.

Notes

  • Take your time caramelizing the onions for the richest flavor.
  • Freshly grated Gruyère and Parmesan melt more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Spinach or mushroom ravioli also work well in this recipe.
  • For a golden cheesy topping, transfer to an oven-safe skillet and broil for 2-3 minutes.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
